MYND Foundation Conducts Comprehensive Dementia and Physical Health Assessments for Elderly in Assam

Dementia and Physical Health Screening Project for Senior Citizens Across Seven Districts of Assam
In March 2026, MYND Foundation, successfully implemented a Dementia and Physical Health Screening Project across seven districts of Assam with support from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. The initiative aimed to promote healthy ageing through the early identification of cognitive, mental, and physical health concerns among senior citizens.
A multidisciplinary team comprising three counseling psychologists, one medical doctor, and one yoga therapist conducted comprehensive dementia screenings and basic health assessments for 158 elderly beneficiaries across Morigaon, Sonitpur, Nagaon, Dima Hasao, Baksa, Bajali, and Nalbari districts.
In addition to the mandated screenings, the project adopted a holistic approach by incorporating yoga sessions, meditation practices, memory-enhancing activities, music, singing, and recreational engagement to improve the overall well-being and social connectedness of participants. Suspected cases of dementia and other mental health conditions were referred to higher medical facilities for comprehensive evaluation and management. Caregivers were provided with educational materials on dementia care, cognitive impairment management, caregiver burden, and burnout prevention. Participants diagnosed with hypertension, diabetes, and other physical health concerns were guided toward appropriate treatment services and free medication schemes where available.
The project identified 83 suspected dementia cases, 32 cases of mild cognitive impairment, 35 cases of depression, 22 individuals requiring psychiatric evaluation, 63 cases of hypertension, 24 cases of diabetes, 10 cases of low blood pressure, and 86 cases with other physical health morbidities.
Through early detection, referral support, caregiver education, and community-based wellness interventions, the project made a meaningful contribution toward promoting active, healthy, and dignified ageing among senior citizens across Assam.
